PROFILE OF COMMUNITY AND INDIVIDUALS SERVEDThe Houston-Harris County area has the second largest Vietnamese population in the country. In the 2000 US Census, Asian-origin Harris County residents demonstrated a population increase of 75.7%, exceeding the 73.5% increase in the county’s Hispanic population. The area’s Vietnamese population recorded the most rapid growth. The largest Vietnamese community is in Alief, where Vietnamese comprise over 10% of the population. VNTW, located in Alief, has more than 200 volunteers along with 10 staff members and 4 student interns, who serves almost 20,000 people (10,460 walk-ins and 9,100 call-ins) in the greater Houston area per year. Even though the majority of the population benefiting from VNTW services is Vietnamese, with limited English language skills and limited resources, VNTW services are open and available to the public regardless of ethnic background. The income of those served ranges from low-income to moderate-income, including recent immigrants, senior residents, family units recently relocated to Texas from other states, and individuals who have recently been out of work due to the downsizing of business corporations. |
